Charcoal Reversal
Aug - Sep 2020
The charcoal reversal technique really challenged my way of thinking when it comes to traditional drawing. By using charcoal on a white surface and erasing the highlights, I was creating a negative image which was the opposite of what I was so used to with graphite.
Charcoal as a medium has a much wider range of values with deep blacks and bright whites which really allowed me to create a more dynamic piece. The gritty and textured surface it creates develops a strong foundation for a stronger sense of depth and dimension that's harder to achieve with graphite.
The technique required different tools and a unique way of thinking about light and shadow. This has pushed me to be more precise and intentional in my planning, resulting in more detailed and impactful designs.
Overall, the charcoal reversal technique has opened up a whole new world of design possibilities for me. It has given me the freedom to experiment with new textures, values, and aesthetics, allowing me to create designs that are truly unique and expressive.
